Chicken & Rice Biscuit

Last Sunday, I tried out a new dog biscuit recipe...Chicken & Rice Biscuit. Ingredients are Minced chicken, chicken broth, canola oil, whole wheat flour.

Compared with the Beef Barley biscuit that I previously baked, I think the Chicken & Rice biscuit smell much more better than the Beef Barley biscuit. Probably because I don't eat beef that's why I find the Beef Barley biscuit not as good as the Chicken & Rice biscuit.

I will be trying out a mixed veggie biscuit later.

Beef

A friend who has a Shih Tzu dog told me that she never feed her dog with beef as according to her that her dog suffer from skin itchiness (skin allergy) when consuming beef as part of her meal. If beef was given to her dog, the skin problems will occur again. She advise me not to feed my dogs with beef...I am wondering if anyone out there facing the same problems.

I ony feed my dogs with stewed beef once a week.

Healthy Dog Biscuit

My sister just got back from UK and bought me a pack of cookie cutter with various shapes. So decided to bake some Healthy dog biscuits on Christmas day for my dogs.

I like the shape of the cookie cutter....so cute!

As usual, Hapi, Jolly, Mike & Tom love the biscuit...except Tiki who is a picky eater, all newly introduced biscuit for Tiki, he will needs time to like the biscuit...fussy!

Biscuit making

Most of the basic dog biscuit ingredients are simple like whole wheat flour, eggs, honey, dog's milk powder, canola oil, chicken or beef broth and for a premium biscuit that include fish, chicken or beef liver, minced beef or chicken, carrot, pumpkin, barley or apple...will take up more time to do the preparation.

The amount of beef or chicken broth to be used, sometime if I followed the quantity stated in the recipe book, the dough turns out to be too wet & sticky and it's impossible to roll the dough and require a lot of flour to be put on the wooden board & rolling pin. Now, I add in the liquid spoon by spoon to make sure they are in the right quantity and the dough turn out to be just the right texture.

For premium biscuit that I baked, like Fish Biscuit-my mom bought me fresh fish from the wet market and then cleaned the fish. My mom will steamed or boiled the fish, then removed the bones and only keep the meat and the fish stock. I will blend the meat & fish stock in the blender to puree. For carrot biscuits, I normally steam or boiled the carrot till cooked and then blend the cooked carrot as I am too lazy to use a fork to make the carrot into mashed carrot. Well for the chicken or liver biscuit, as usual the liver will be cleaned to remove all the fats around and cut into small pieces and fry with canola oil till cooked and again blend into puree. For barley, have to cook a few hours earlier to make sure that barley is properly cooked. And for the apples, I normally peel the skin and grated the apple by hand, I use the grated apple & the juice for the biscuits.

For the chicken broth or beef broth, I normally use freshly cooked one that prepared in the morning.

All my basic biscuits are coated with a layer of egg yolk to make the biscuit looks shinny and smells yummy too.

It's time consuming, I normally start baking in the afternoon, if there are more than 2 types of biscuits to be baked, I will have to bake until 8pm or 9pm. The biscuit stick is more easier to make as I only need to roll the dough by hand into a stick shape, I do not have to cut the dough one by ine using a cookie cutter.

These dog biscuits require at least 30 minutes to bake...

Dog Biscuits

This Friday evening I will bake Healthy Biscuit Stick and on Saturday afternoon I will bake Carrot Biscuit or Pumpkin Biscuit and Beef Barley Biscuit. If my mom decided to cook pumpkin on Saturday then I will ask her for some pumpkin for the biscuit if not I will have to switch to Carrot. Pumpkin can be consumed by dogs but not in large quantities.

Pumpkin is good for constipation, if dogs consume a lot of pumpkin, the stool will be soft. Pumpkin is also consist of Vitamin A.

I am trying out this new recipe - Beef Barley Biscuit which I have to fry the beef till cooked and put it into the blender together with cooked barley and blend into puree.

On Sunday, I will try out a baked meatloaf recipe for my dog

Homemade Biscuit

Last Saturday, as usual I baked Healthy dog biscuit & Apple Oatmeal biscuit. The Apple Oatmeal biscuit is sweeter than the earlier version as I have used a bigger Fuji Apple, grated apple and the juice to mix into the flour, I tried one piece of the biscuit and I find this one much suitable for my taste but it's too hard..he..he

This coming Saturday, I have yet to decide what I shall bake, I think I will bake Healthy dog biscuit and Beef liver biscuit or Pumpkin biscuit or Chicken Barley or Fishy biscuit...still deciding on any one of these. Will think about it first or shall ask around before making my decision

I am so so glad to hear that rodents like my home-baked biscuit...I never thought that beside dogs, even rodents will like my biscuits...it's great at least it is a healthy biscuit with no preservatives.

Fishy Biscuit

I am trying out another new biscuit recipe...."Fishy Biscuit". The ingredients are Fresh fish, fresh fish stock, whole wheat flour, egg, canola oil.

A lot of preparation to be done, I have to steam the fish and remove the bones and take out the meat. The fish bone make into fish stock....wow..a lot of work to be done.
Making this biscuit for a lady to let her cats try out....

My dogs like the Fishy biscuit too and just now given some samples to "Lily", Lily seems to like the biscuit as well. Lily is a puppy who really look like my dog - Tom.... Lily is so pretty.

Just receive a feedback that Lily do not like Sweet Potato...so I guess only my dogs at home like the sweet potato biscuit. But feedback for Healthy Dog Biscuit, Apple Oatmeal Biscuit & Chicken Liver Biscuit are all positive.

Biscuit

Yesterday afternoon I baked "Healthy Dog Biscuit" and "Crunchy Carrot Biscuit". As you can see from the pictures that I've used a smaller cookie cutter for some of the biscuits, reason is that some small dogs have difficulty eating the biscuit if it's the normal size, normal size is good for medium / large dogs. Another reason for making a smaller size biscuit is that a lady has asked me to bake the biscuits for her persian cats. I understand that Cats are picky eater therefore I am eager to find out if the cats will like my biscuits or not...

The biscuits shown in the picture is Crunchy carrot biscuit, you can see the difference of the biscuit as one is brushed with egg yolk (the shining one) and the other one I've forgotten to brush with egg yolk. Which one looks better? I think the small biscuits are so cute!!

Yummy! Yummy! I have eaten one piece of the biscuit just now, it is so hard & crunchy with the smell & taste of sweet potato....good for the dogs but I would prefer a sweeter version..he..he

Commercial Dog Food

I feed my dogs a little commercial dry dog food (dry kibble) once a day after their usual home-cooked dinner. Recently I have been reading a lot of articles from the internet on pet food recalled and also ingredients of commercial pet food. I fe el so guilty of feeding my dogs with such unhealthy food. I am thinking of not feeding them any commercial dry food from now on. As if later, they developed any serious illness, I do not know what to do as there are no Animal Hospital in Brunei and the local vets are not fully equipped.
According to one of the articles from the internet, one of the main ingredient we see from the commercial dog food is "Meat-by-product", Meat by-product refers to animal parts that are not actually meat and often includes intestines, bones, brain, stomach, lungs, kidneys etc. Disgusting!
Preservatives are also one of the dangerous additions to dog food. They are used to extend the shelf-life of the products, improve the tastes. Common preservatives are BHT, BHA, Ethoxyquin which is used as pesticide.
And those colorful kibbles, red & green are all colorings which is also harmful to our dogs.
There's a recent recall of Pedigree Dog & Cat Treat in the U.S. and also IAMS pet food has been boycotted by some countries as they used animals to test on their products.
I know & agreed that commercial dog food is the most convenient way to feed our dog as everyone of us have to work and we really do not have time to cook for our dogs and commercial dog food is more cheaper as compare with home-cooked meal.
For those that can afford, it's really better to cook for your dogs, it does not have to be difficult & time consuming. You can cook the food in advance during the evening and warm the food before serving to your dogs. For myself, I cooked with a slow cooker and when approaching meal time, I heat the food up with the slow cooker before serving to my dogs.
Think about it...we are feeding rubbish, unwanted waste to our lovely dogs....
Even baby milk powders can contain Melamine...what more can be added to pet food...

Sweet Sweet Potato Biscuit

This Saturday, I am going to bake "Sweet Sweet Potato Biscuit" for my dogs and on Sunday afternoon, I am going to bake "Apple Cake" for my boys & girls

I will be uploading the pictures for the "Sweet Sweet Potato Biscuit" on Saturday evening and for the "Apple Cake" I will upload the picture on Sunday evening.

My dogs enjoy a few slice of fresh apples twice a week...healthy evening treats.

I have stopped buying them commercial treats after reading news/reports on many pet food/treats recalled. You never know what the manufacturers put in when making those lovely looking treats.

For my home-made treats, at least I know what ingredients I have used to make those treats. I also try out some of the biscuits that I baked for my dogs, the biscuits smell so nice and crunchy only that it is tasteless to me as no sugar added in all dog biscuits. Except for the "Chicken Liver Biscuit" I do not dare to try out as I really caould not stand the smell of the chicken liver..he..he

Hapi

Hapi is a Shih Tze mix, he is 3 1/2 years old. Hapi is actually my sis's dog, my mom & I have been taking care of Hapi on behalf of my sis who is still studying in UK. Hapi is a charming boy, everyone loves him. Each time if he did something bad when we wanted to scold him and if we look into his big innocent eyes, we will not scold him at the end. Hapi is treated like a Prince at home, he acted as he is the big brother among the other dogs, he tends to forget about his size as compare with the others. Hapi also like to eat, eat & eat, he had put on a lot of weight and it's really hard to make him lose weight. Hapi sleeps with my mom. The other dogs have their own house. When comes to grooming, we will have a headache, his slightly curl hair grow very fast, it's really not fun to groom Hapi, take a lot of time & patience.

Mike

Mike is also 4 years old, he is Tom's brother. Like Tom, Mike is also a Mongrel. Mike had lost some weight lately before that Mike is the largest as compare with the others. Mike is more attached to his human friends, he like to lay down or sit beside me when I do my sewing or watching TV. Like Tom, he also loves to eat especially biscuits, he will do anything you asked in order to get his biscuits. The bad thing about Mike is that when he starts barking, it will be non-stop until he is tired, his barks will trigger my headache...his bark is like an echo ringing inside your ear and travel to your heads...then the headache started...Mike is also very stubborn!

Liver

Tried making some home-made beef liver treats for my dogs but not successful cause I've baked it too long and it burns a bit, some of the smaller pieces are black like charcoal..ha..ha!

But the rest still o.k. It is crunchy and the smell of liver makes the dog go crazy! Dogs love livers - chicken liver or beef liver. Liver contains Vitamin A, but I read from a book that it says nit recommend to feed livers daily to dogs as excessive Vitamin A will become toxic to the dog.

Next time, when your dogs don't feel like eating, add some cooked liver to their meal, it will make them eat again.

Not recommend to feed dogs with pork liver as you have to be very sure that the pork liver is properly cooked or else will have problems with intestinal parasites/worms.

Home-cooked meal

Please see pictures of my dogs home-cooked meal - Chicken Breast with Liver & Soup + some dry food. This is yesterday's lunch & dinner.
